Panel Discussion: Overcoming Solar Panel and Battery Supply and Production Challenges

Description: In a shocking reversal of long-term established industry cost projection assumptions, the price of nearly all equipment has skyrocketed over the past year, creating unexpected headwinds for the solar and storage projects needed to meet policy goals. A perfect storm of covid-related manufacturing shortages, the imposition of tariffs, and the Department of Commerce antidumping investigation triggered cost increases that could reach 200-300% year-over-year. In response the Biden Administration is using executive orders and the Defense Production Act to accelerate the development of domestic supplies of solar and storage equipment, as well as a two-year waiver on solar product tariffs to avoid potential near-term disaster.

This panel will examine the current situation, and explore the potential for long-term solutions, including:

  • Where does the DoC ADCTD investigation stand today?
  • What cost increases are being seen for modules, batteries and other components?
  • What are procurement officers doing in response?
  • What loans and grants could be used to grow domestic solar panel manufacturing and other clean-energy technologies?
  • How long will supply trail demand as the scope of project development accelerates to deliver the benefits of solar and storage projects and achieve policy goals?

Moderator: Jeffrey M. Britt, Senior Vice President, McGuireWoods Consulting LLC

  • Paul Russell, Senior Vice President, Procurement, Silicon Ranch
  • Tanya Sessions, Vice President, Business Development, Origis Energy
  • Kate Zaykowski, Vice President, Strategic Communications, McGuireWoods Consulting
