Project Overview

Tallahassee Solar I and II at a combined 62 MWs, when completed in 2020, comprised the world’s largest airport-based solar farm.

The City of Tallahassee offered customers a solar energy rate option called Tallahassee Solar. The City operates two large solar facilities developed and operated by Origis Energy located on the property of the Tallahassee International Airport (TLH). They supply a total solar power generation of 62 megawatts. This program was a subscription-based program and is now fully subscribed.  The program is part of the City’s Clean Energy Plan.

ECONOMIC IMPORTANCE

In concert with Tallahassee Solar I and II, Origis Energy donated funds to three local charities including the Southern Scholarship Foundation (SSF) is an independent 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation serving higher education students, Sustainable Tallahassee, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting environmental, economic, and social sustainability in the Tallahassee regional area through education and collaboration and the ReThink Energy Florida Summer Energy Camp for children at Tallahassee Housing Authority’s public-housing facilities, thus ensuring programs are provided to under-served children.  Origis maintains an annual giving for the ReThink Energy Florida summer camp program.

ENERGY IMPORTANCE

The City of Tallahassee’s Clean Energy Resolution (19-R-04) set a target of achieving 100% net, clean renewable energy no later than 2050 or sooner as technology advances and the rate at which the price of clean renewable energy production and storage decline.

The City operates two large solar facilities located at the property of the Tallahassee International Airport (TLH). Solar Farm 1, which is 20 megawatts, sits on 120 acres and Solar Farm 2, which is twice as big at 40 megawatts, sits on 240 acres. Since February 2020, a portion of the solar energy output from the solar farm has been allocated to cover the energy needs of all City-owned buildings, the first city in Florida to be powered by clean energy. The balance of solar energy generated has been fully-subscribed to the 1,600+ residential and commercial participants in the Tallahassee Solar program.
